Accelerating Autonomous Mining Truck Deployment through Integration of Virtual Testing and Digital Twins

Tuesday May 26, 2026 15:00 - 15:15 Conference hall

Exhibitor: Epiroc Sweden AB

Speaker: Johannes Mutamba

The implementation of underground truck automation in ramp environments presents significantchallenges due to shared traffic and the requirement for isolated safety zones for autonomousvehicles. This paper outlines a novel approach that combines virtualroute mapping and pre-commissioning in a simulated environment to minimize production interference during deployment.By leveraging scanned maps and conducting extensive virtual testing prior to truck delivery, wevalidated operational strategies and optimized route design without impacting ongoing miningactivities. Furthermore, the ability to test virtual routes appears to reduce the need for extensivefine-tuning and may help streamline commissioning, though further validation is needed.Beyond technical efficiency, this methodology offers substantial benefits for change management byproviding a controlled environment for stakeholder engagement and operator familiarization. Thevirtual setup can be extended into a full training platform, enabling personnel to gain confidence inautomated processes before live implementation. Additionally, the approach establishes thefoundation for a digital twin, allowing mining operations to test alternative production scenarios andstrategies safely andcost-effectively. These capabilities demonstrate a promising pathway towardsafer, more productive, and scalable automation in underground mining operations.
